Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night

Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night

Getting your newborn to sleep through the night is a common challenge, especially for first-time parents. Babies need to have 14 to 17 hours of sleep every day, but often, it stretches at a few hours at a time.

In fact, newborns don’t know the difference between day and night, so your child may be wide-awake from 1 AM to 5 AM.

As a provider of child care in Redding, California, we want to help you avoid this from happening. Here are the top three things you need to do to get your newborn to sleep all night.

  1. Know your baby’s sleep needs. In the first 2 months, your baby may prefer eating over sleeping. If you’re breastfeeding, he or she may need to eat every 2 hours. Understanding your child’s needs is a key factor in setting a bedtime routine.
  2. Create a bedtime routine.Try an evening bath or playing calming music to mark the end of the day.
  3. Try the “progressive watching” method. If your baby cries after you leave, you have to wait somewhere between 1 and 5 minutes before checking the room. Remember to start this strategy if your baby is at least 5 or 6 months old.
